Electing him leader was like sacking Captain Mainwaring and replacing him with Pike - even though the charming but guileless Ming Campbell was more like Sergeant Wilson.

He was joint leader at the 2005 election, when Labour promised the people a vote on the EU Constitution.

He combines mendacity with a yellow streak the width of the Channel, which is why he wouldn't even attend the formal signing of the Lisbon Treaty.
If the Liberals have misplaced their cojones, Gordon must have been castrated at puberty.
Had he been Prime Minister in 1939, he'd have done a backstairs deal with Hitler, while pretending it was nothing to do with him, and then tried to bully the Commons into accepting it.

If the Lib Dems have got the leader they deserve, then so has Labour.
