NORTH Wales officials last night defended their town after it was labelled a “shit-hole” by a leading snooker player.

Major snooker tournaments have been held at the Pontin’s site in Prestatyn for a number of years.

But one former European Open winner caused outrage by heavily criticising the seaside town in a weekend interview.

Although he largely hit out at the venue, Scottish player Stephen Maguire also went into a rant about the town itself.

He also said all other snooker players “hated” having to play in the town, despite it being a recognised fixture on the snooker circuit.

A number of officials in the town defended themselves against Maguire’s claims yesterday.

Maguire said: “You’ve heard of the Crucible, right? Well, Prestatyn is the Cubicle.

“It’s a  "shit-hole of a place ", a graveyard for snooker players...Everyone hates going to Prestatyn.”

Maguire, 26, won the European Open final in Malta in 2004 against Jimmy White, and claimed the UK Championship eight months later.

After beating Ronnie O’Sullivan in the first round, O’Sullivan said the Glasgow-born player could “rule the game for the next ten years.”

Outgoing Prestatyn mayor Sharon Frobisher said last night: “I can’t believe this guy’s cheek. People have paid good money to see him play here and to support him.

“I hope he doesn’t come back here again.
