As an even younger 'un than I am now I thought the Germans were our big rival. Mainly because of Football hooligans singing about 2 world wars and 1 world cup. It was really attractive to a budding English "nationalist". The brainwashing started when the previous idea my parents and grandparents were taught in school( that the English came from Germany) was erased from the history books.
This was not just after WW 2 as you'd expect but if actually came after Euro 96. The government saw an oppurtunity to bring together the Scots,Welsh N.Irish and English to try and make one people. The catalyst was the anti-German feeling during the tournament as German hooligans clashed with Polish and the notoriously unionist and "British" Chelsea hooligans.
Confusing isn't it! Basically: The government chooses to mess around with our ethnic origin as they please to whatever suits them and we are very brainwashable after 1000 plus years under foreign rule.
At the 2006 world cup the government couldn't risk too much trouble with our EU overlords so to try and blunt the edge of the English hooligans attacking the Germans they came out with "The English are really Germans". Which is true but without meaning too they triggered a rise in Englisc nationalism like ours. English as a separate entity from Celts. Big mistake! And we've profited.

My theory about the Celts is that they are closely related to the C**ts, and are only separated by the 'e' and 'l' genes, though my own recent studies have led me to the conclusion that they have more of the 'u' and 'n' genes than first thought.
