Came across this site which covers the battle in great depth. Housing developers want to build a road over the battle site and this group is campaining against it. They are working on a tapestry of the battle which I hope to have a look at in York next week (Jorvik festival) and they organise walks across the battlefield although can;'t see any plans for 2012 yet. I also like the way they refer to English rather than Anglo Saxon.

Sir Winston Churchill
"Never Give In"
"This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."
"If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it the third time — a tremendous whack."
"Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry."
"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."

That's exactly the point, a good way to eliminate any trace of what happened, which in time it would do.
Chip chip, chip away, and before you know it nobody gives a shit. But unless there is a halt to mass immigration, that housing estate will probably end up mostly occupied by them, like many others have and they would have no interest in what went before.

Push us the Englisc too far, and you shall know the full meaning of retribution.
Fair play, tolerance and freedom. Over the last millennium all of these qualities have marked us out as a nation and so, in the future, will continue to do so... They also say that we're always pissed, completely arrogant and hate foreigners... Ah well, nobody's perfect!

I met the author on the day and he signed my copy of the book which I am already nearly half way through. It was a success for the Fulford group and they raised more money than expexcted in their fight to keep developers of the battle site. I had no idea how big the battle of Fulford was and how important it would prove to be in 1066. The author Charles Jones came across as passionate about English history and determined to stand fast at Fulford despite being bullied, threatened and lied to by 'high-up' people. The discovery of a large colony of Water Voles on the site has certainly helped the cause!
I think the last paragraph of the book is worth a re-print here ~
''The hero's of this story are Harold Godwinson and the English people. I cannot detect any selfish ambition in Harold's actions. He was a good servent of England and his death at Hastings was a blow to the country. The willingness of the English to produce four armies to defend their homeland suggests they had something worth fighting for. 1066 was a setback, but one from which the people of England quickly began to recover. Achievements such as the Magna Carta and the creation of a representive forum were only postponed, rather than prevented by the killing of the legitimate king of England, Harold Godwinson.
The omission from the national narrative of the battle of Fulford is one that historians need to answear. We hear it is the victors who write history. If so, it is time to rebel and insist that a correct record of events is made.''
Here is a link to 'Runesmith' who had a stall at York with some interesting Saxon era hand-made stuff, I especially like the Offa's brooch based on the Staffordshire Hoard design. Free posting anywhere in the world for our friends abroad : )
