The urban growth ambitions for Norwich represent the single biggest threat to Norfolk’s countryside for generations – according to the planning expert now leading the fight against over-development.

The county’s branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has created the new role of planning and campaigns manager in recognition of what it sees as an unprecedented array of challenges.

Caroline Davison, a conservationist and historian, who worked in Norfolk County Council’s planning department for more than 20 years, has become the first holder of the new post.

She said the greatest threat to Norfolk’s landscape today was the joint core strategy (JCS) adopted by the Greater Norwich Development Partnership (GNDP) – a document which allocates land for 37,000 new homes by 2026, mostly around the city’s rural hinterland.

Having worked on the landscape assessments for the policy during her time at County Hall, Ms Davison described herself as a “poacher-turned-gamekeeper”. She said the house-building targets were too high in a county, which must also cope with the landscape and social demands of drought, population rise and new energy infrastructure.

“The JCS is the biggest threat to the character of Norfolk and the area around Norwich for many years,” she said.

“One of our core policies is about protecting the tranquillity of the countryside and that could all be threatened by this influx of houses. Once it is gone, it is gone forever.

“We have to look at whether there is another way we can do this, otherwise there will not be any more countryside left.”

GNDP chairman Andrew Proctor said the growth strategy was essential to control the development which the city’s population would need in the future, and that green spaces and environmental projects were at the heart of the project.

“Describing the Joint Core Strategy as the ‘biggest threat to the countryside’ does not make sense,” he said. “Exactly the opposite is true. Without a JCS in place, the area would be vulnerable to speculative development. What the JCS does is to set out the best way to manage growth and deliver much needed homes, jobs and infrastructure, whilst protecting the countryside from over-development.”

I once read that if London had been allowed to continue it's spread at the rate it was growing prior to WWI, that it would encompass all of East Anglia and the Midlands upto Birmingham and the south coast from Dover to Southampton. That is a horrible thought. I hope this latest urban sprawl is stopped. It only encourages immigrants.

Morons such as Andrew Proctor who are there just to line their pockets do not car about anything. He and his ilk come out with the old red herring about 'growth'. Some one should tell him that something that keeps growing and eating into other parts is a cancer and certainly not of benefit to anyone. Even the cancer will fall victim to its own growth as its finishes off it host.

The lunatic desire for London to expand and control, resulted in 'Greater London', where parts of the surrounding ancient shires were cut off and attached to London. As you Witnere indicated  London's expansion was an ill omen, that goes hand in hand as Steed said with population and that goes down to immigration.

They have already been building over the Downs.

I hope CPRE stop Norwich and Norfolk becoming the next London, Birmingham or Manchester, though I think that is the aim of liberal machine and the gravy train merchants. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if folk start knocking down any expansion themselves.

I have always thought cities should remain within their ancient walls or their immediate area. Not deliberately pushed out to sprawl and swallow up, destroy and obliterate all around.

part of me wishes the South would just break off and sink, with all the immigrants and non-English on it. The rest of us can boot the Scots back over to Ireland since they're such butt-buddies anyway, leaving a nice little country for the rest of us....

mine too, though I'm a Northerner for half my life now! Anyway I meant London and its 'burbs. The Franks can have that if they like. Some land off us for a change!

london is ours despite all the rubbish we are told by the liberal media and the problem with giving up even a single inch of englisc land to uiltanders is they will not be satisfied with london and will take it as a sign of weakness and not stop untill they have it all and us extinct as a folc .it will just be a new form of danegeld and we all know how paying the danegeld works out so no we will must reclaim london for our folc it wont be easy but it can be done if the will is there for if we desert the remaining englisc who out of stubborness pride or refusal to give up their city to the orcs then how can we honestly trust that when its say york,s turn to be invaded that it wont just be given up to the orcs?we need to stand shoulder to shoulder if we are to win and while it might be nescessary to retreat from someware it should allways be with the intention of gaining the strength to reclaim what is ours.

Incidentally, just come back from Prague. Guess what I didn't see there. Yep - fucking Muslims. I saw three blacks (working, not lazing about dealing drugs and raping young girls), and the rest were either tourists (easy to spot) or white Czech. No fucking Pakis. And that's a capital city.

So...defended and reclaimed. Good words. What are the actions?

At the end the day to its up to each individual what how they go about things.  .. I used to know people from Slovakia (next door to Prague, they complained  how arabs were moving in)
