I have thought about brewing my own Mead but whats the point if I dont like it.
Worry not, I have just found a place in my town of Chelmsford that sells 'Traditional Mead' from the Lyme Bay Winery.

I like it very much and now I'm off to Boots to buy my brewing equiptment.

Got to be cheaper than £7 for 75 cl of the stuff from the shop,

Not cheap, but gorgeous stuff. I particularly like the spiced variety. Let us know how you get on with your own brew. Posted Image

Steed,
I shall, hic, indeed.
May have to bring some to a future moot as I dont bugger about. When I say I am going to brew some I mean quite a lot of the stuff.
I wonder if I bring a bit of wood home from work each day how long it would be before I can build my own Mead Hall lol

There are couple available from supermarkets that I know of. Norfolk Mead is available at certain ASDA stores, and Golden Harvest from Morrisons. As others have said, it's down to the individual palate.  Norfolk Mead (where available) is three quid a bottle, whereas Golden Harvest is £4.22.

You call it freedom and tolerance. I call it a death dance for England

Really?! Wow - thanks for the heads-up. I've been paying £8+ a bottle from specialist farm shops.

I didn't like the cheaper stuff that much. Once you taste the good Mead, it's easy to tell the difference and I think it's worth paying the extra.

Still, you can always get a Mead horn and lace the top with honey for some added flavour.

Morrisons stuff is called 'Harvest Gold'. Its anything but in my opinion.

If your ever up near Bamburgh you want to visit Lindisfarne Island. The mead from there is delicious. Im currently looking for recipes with mead to use my three bottles of cheaper stuff with.

I bought a bottle on Lindisfarne last summer, think it is a taste I have yet to acquire, I am used to good beer and whisky.

Mead, I think, is an acquired taste. The cheap commercial stuff doesn't help, in my opinion, as it's far too sweet...

Best off making your own... And metheglin... Once you have your home brew basics, you can try other stuff as well...

My wife loves the stuff. I find it usually too sweet and prefer me Ale. However I'm sure I can brew a nice spiced dry mead. Been meaning to try for a while now. Will have to get my act together!

You can mix it with strong beer half and half. Tast good and it's not so sweet. Here you can buy meadbeer.

Cheers

My wife cant stand it but I cant understand her. Over the years she has drunk some trendy cocktails that make your toes curl.
I like fortified wine and the stuff I tried reminded me of that, just twice the cost !!.
Will let you know how my brew is going.
