Excess immigration is still one of the main concerns among the British public, the UK Independence Party (UKIP) has said.

Quoting data released by the German Marshall Fund in the 'Transatlantic Trends: Immigration survey for 2011', UKIP said that 57 per cent of people think there are "too many immigrants", 68 per cent regard immigration as more of a problem than an opportunity and 71 per cent are worried about illegal immigration.

The survey also showed that in Europe, 62 per cent of respondents supported more highly educated immigrants while 29 per cent agreed that more immigrants with low educational levels should be permitted. But British respondents were the most wary of immigrants with low educational levels, with only 17 per cent in favour of letting in more of them.

Also, the effect of immigrant workers on reducing wages was an issue, with 53 per cent in the USA believing that they had a negative effect and 52 per cent in the UK. But there was more concern elsewhere – Spain (55 per cent), France (63 per cent), Germany (57 per cent), and Italy (54 per cent).

"While the UK maintains its traditional sympathy to those driven from their home by natural disasters, persecution and war, we are very concerned at the sheer scale of inward migration", said UKIP's home affairs spokesman Gerard Batten. "It makes perfect sense that this is so when the UK is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Figures released by Migrationwatch only this week show 401 people per square kilometre in England."

He went on: "Despite all its fine words, the government has no handle on the problem of immigration, either from the EU or from the wider world. Its refusal to take steps to get a grip on the problem leads to enormous concerns amongst the people of Britain, and serious issues about the allocation of public resources. To carry on allowing people in with such ease is just unsustainable in the modern world."

Sir Winston Churchill

"Never Give In"

"This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

"If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it the third time — a tremendous whack."

"Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry."

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."
