Well, he led the charge which won the Battle of Ashdown, but it didn't repel the Danish invasion - they followed up with a few hard fought narrow victories, and after Aethelred's death, Alfred paid the Danes off, while he rearranged his kingdom on his succession.
Still, Ashdown was a famous victory,
and rightly remembered as such. Alfred got impatient waiting for his brother, the King, to finish his prayers, and led his personal troops uphill into the Danes, without the main army - not quite the over-religious prig that Mr. Cornwell would have us believe, eh?
