URUGUAY yesterday intervened in the Falklands dispute by banning vessels with the flag of the British territory from its ports.

President Jose Mujica announced the ban in an apparent bid to ease tensions with Argentina, which claims the south Atlantic islands as its territory.

Earlier this month it emerged that Argentina’s Navy was boarding European fishing boats working the rich seas around the islands.

Mike Summers, a member of the Falklands Legislative Assembly, told the Daily Express yesterday: “If this is true it would be an escalation of the Argentinian blockade to another level. It would not be good for the Falklands fishing industry.”

He added: “It would be an end to a very long relationship between the Falkland Islands and Uruguay.”

The ban affects mainly fishing boats but it could hit the islanders because Montevideo, capital and chief port of Uruguay, is a stopping off point for British ships to and from the Falklands.

Theoretically the ban, months before the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war with Argentina, does not apply to British-registered ships. But last year Uruguay refused to allow HMS Gloucester to carry out a routine visit to Montevideo.

The row comes two months before Prince William spends six weeks in the Falklands as an RAF helicopter pilot.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “Uruguay’s decision is potentially very disturbing. We have summoned their ambassador this afternoon to express our strongest concerns, and to ask for clarification. We are considering our next steps carefully.

“It would be disappointing if Uruguay has resolved to support Argentina’s shameful attempts to damage a small island people’s economy and livelihood.”

That does surprise me , they used to welcome our ships regardless of their flag. I suppose it is a question of of blood , Latino`s against Gringo`s.

Or it could be a question of Argentina allowing Uruguayan fishing boats to use the sea around the Falklands if they invade again. Uruguay has the only close ports for trading so they hold a lot of power over the Falklands economy. Rio Grande is the next closest in Brazil and then Chilean ports which mean going through the Drake passage which is no small distance to Punta Aranas which is where our south atlantic scientific expeditions docked so they're friendly enough at the moment.

Firstly,welcome back Guthlac,In troubled times like goes with like ,I would expect latino countries to stick together in times of troubles like wise I would expect friendly counties showing support to us you know erm!.....and erm! oh you know the countries that would help us out in troubled timeslike erm!...................Oh f**k it is there anyone out there that wants to be our friends.........? Oh well Billy no mates until you want our help again I suppose.

The government waffles-on about Afghanistan being in our national interest, when we all know no interest of ours is served by being there and it costs us our troops lives and millions in taxes a day. How about they redeploy some of those resources to an arena where our national interests are being very clearly and directly threatened?

How stupid and shortsighted do they feel about scrapping the Ark Royal and Harriers now?

Hello  3 sons mate. The argies are getting all cocky because they know our politicians have decimated our military capabilities defend our interests. The Falkland the oilfields will be needed by as they they will give England greater energy oil independence and revenue. I knew it was a mistake to allow those argentinian soldier so buried on the Falklands. They should bee sent home and every latin place-name on the islands dumped to be replaced with an English name.

As far the argies trying to edge their way into Falkland isles waters,  there should be no warning, no messing around just sink their ships.

Good points Unbroken Sheilddwall. Chileans are not really linkers of Argentina, though both countries have eased off with each in the last few years.

Yes , they are using our armed forces and national resources for their personal political ideology and to line their pockets, while yet again ignoring our independent national interests.
